6 Myths About Working in the Fitness Industry

Sunday Pilates Club Co.

Hey lovelies,

Working in the fitness industry, especially as a Pilates instructor, it can look very aesthetic from the outside. Cute sets, toned bodies, and studio selfies. But behind the scenes? It’s a lot more layered than people think.

Here are 6 myths about working in fitness and the truth behind them:

1. “You Must Always Look Perfect”

There’s this pressure to always look put together, but the reality is, we’re human too. Some days we’re bloated, tired, or just not feeling our best. Being an instructor isn’t about perfection, it’s about showing up authentically and guiding others.

2. “It’s Just Working Out All Day”

Teaching Pilates is very different from taking a class. It’s cueing, correcting form, observing multiple bodies at once, and holding space for clients. It’s mentally and physically demanding in ways people don’t always see.

3. “You Have to Be Naturally Fit”

Not true. Many instructors build their strength over time. Pilates is about consistency and control, not being “naturally” good. Everyone starts somewhere, even instructors.

4. “It’s an Easy, Fun Job”

Yes, it’s rewarding, but it’s also early mornings, late nights, and constant energy output. You’re responsible for creating a safe, effective, and uplifting experience for every class. That takes effort.

5. “You Don’t Need to Keep Learning”

The best instructors are always learning, about anatomy, technique, and how to better support their clients. Growth doesn’t stop once you’re certified.

6. “It’s All About Aesthetics”

Fitness isn’t just about how you look, it’s about how you feel, move, and function. As a Pilates instructor, the goal is helping people feel stronger, more confident, and more connected to their bodies.

Working in fitness has taught me discipline, empathy, and patience. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s incredibly fulfilling.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned?
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about showing up, for yourself and for others.

Love,
