New to Pilates? Here’s What No One Tells You

Sunday Pilates Club Co.

Hey beautiful!

Whether you just booked your first class or you’ve been stalking studios for weeks, welcome. Starting Pilates can feel exciting… and slightly intimidating. We’re answering the most common questions new Pilates girls ask before stepping into the studio.

  1. What should I wear to my first Pilates class?

Comfortable, fitted activewear is best. Think leggings or biker shorts and a supportive top that allows you to move freely. Avoid oversized shirts as instructors need to see your alignment. And don’t forget grip socks - especially for reformer classes, for hygiene and stability. A neutral pair like the Sunday Pilates Club Grip Socks in Sorbet keeps your look polished while giving you the grip and confidence you need on the carriage.

  1. Do I need to be flexible to start Pilates?

Absolutely not. Pilates is designed to build flexibility over time. You do not need splits, you do not need dancer legs. You just need consistency and an open mind.

  1. Is Pilates actually hard?

It looks slow, but it burns. Pilates focuses on controlled, precise movements that deeply activate small stabilizing muscles. You may not be dripping in sweat, but you will feel it the next day.

  1. Will Pilates help me tone?

Yes, but not in the bulky way. Pilates builds long, lean muscle definition, improves posture, and strengthens your core. Over time, you’ll notice subtle sculpting and better muscle engagement.

  1. What’s the difference between mat and reformer Pilates?

Mat Pilates uses your bodyweight and small props on the floor. Reformer Pilates uses a machine with springs for resistance. Reformer tends to feel more guided and supported, while mat can feel deceptively challenging.

  1. How often should beginners go?

Start with 2 to 3 times a week. This gives your body time to adapt and recover. Once you build strength and endurance, you can increase frequency if you’d like.

  1. Will I look silly if I don’t know the moves?

Not at all. Every single person in that room had a first class once. Instructors expect beginners and will guide you. Focus on your own movement, Pilates is not competitive.

  1. Should I eat before class?

A light snack 60–90 minutes before class is ideal. Something simple like fruit, yogurt, or toast. Avoid heavy meals right before especially for core-focused sessions.

  1. Why is Pilates so expensive?

Small class sizes, highly trained instructors, and specialized equipment (especially reformers) contribute to the cost. Think of it as investing in guided, technique-focused movement rather than just a workout.

  1. When will I see results?

Many people feel stronger within 3–4 weeks of consistent practice. Visible results vary, but improved posture, core engagement, and body awareness often happen first.

Pilates isn’t about being perfect, it’s about learning how to move intentionally. Your first class may feel unfamiliar, but that’s where growth begins. Take it slow, stay consistent, and most importantly, enjoy the process. The “Pilates girl” aesthetic is cute but the strength and confidence you build? That’s the real glow-up.

Goodluck for your first class, angels!

Love,
